Cochlear Implants in Children

A Guide for Parents

By Dr Dilpreet Bajwa – ENT & Cochlear Implant Surgeon

As a cochlear implant surgeon, one of the most common questions I hear from parents is: “Will my child be able to hear and speak normally?” The answer depends on many factors — especially how early we diagnose hearing loss and begin treatment. The good news is that with modern cochlear implant technology, early therapy, and proper rehabilitation, many children today are able to develop

excellent listening and spoken language skills. This guide is designed to help parents understand cochlear implants in simple and practical language.

My Approach as a Cochlear Implant Surgeon

I  strongly believe that every child has a right to hear, and to hear with Clarity

Cochlear implantation is not just about surgery — it is about helping children develop communication, confidence, and independence through long-term rehabilitation and family-centered care. It is a team work where parents along with the surgeon and the speech language pathologist have to work hand in hand in order to help our children become independent and are able to achieve their potential.

What Is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an advanced electronic hearing device designed for children with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids.

Unlike hearing aids, which only make sounds louder, a cochlear implant helps the hearing nerve directly receive sound signals so the brain can interpret sound more effectively.

Which Children May Need a Cochlear Implant?

Children may be candidates if they have severe to profound hearing loss, delayed speech development, poor response to hearing aids, or difficulty understanding speech despite amplification.

What Signs Should Parents Watch For?

Parents should seek evaluation if their child does not respond to sounds normally, has delayed speech, frequently increases TV/mobile volume, or does not respond when called.

How Do We Evaluate a Child for Cochlear Implantation?

Evaluation may include hearing tests such as:

OAE, BERA/ABR, ASSR, behavioural audiometry, Pure Tone Audiometry, Tympanometry, HRCT temporal bone, MRI inner ear, and  hearing aid trial with speech-language assessment.

Is Cochlear Implant Surgery Safe?

Cochlear implant surgery is a well-established procedure performed under general anesthesia. Most children recover quickly and return home within 1–2 days.

What Happens After Surgery?

The implant is activated a few weeks after surgery. The child gradually learns to recognize sounds through regular mapping sessions and speech/listening therapy.

Why Is Speech Therapy Important?

Speech and auditory rehabilitation are essential. Parents play a major role by ensuring consistent device usage, therapy attendance, and listening practice at home.

Will My Child Speak Normally?

Many children with cochlear implants develop excellent spoken language and attend mainstream schools. Outcomes depend on early implantation, therapy, family involvement, and regular device use.
