Adenoid Enlargement & Adenoidectomy

What Are Adenoids?

Adenoids are small pads of immune tissue located behind the nose, at the back of the throat. They are part of the body’s defense system and help children fight infections during early childhood. Adenoids are not visible through the mouth because they sit high behind the nose.

Is It Normal for Adenoids to Enlarge?

Yes. In most children, adenoids naturally become larger between the ages of 2 to 6 years as the immune system develops and the child gets exposed to infections.

Normally:
• Adenoids grow during early childhood
• Reach their largest size around preschool age
• Slowly shrink naturally during later childhood and teenage years
In many children, enlarged adenoids improve on their own over time.

When Do Adenoids Become a Problem?

Sometimes, adenoids become excessively enlarged or repeatedly infected and do not shrink properly. When this happens, they can block the back of the nose and affect breathing, sleep, hearing, and overall quality of life.

Common Symptoms of Enlarged Adenoids

• Persistent mouth breathing
• Snoring during sleep
• Noisy breathing
• Blocked nose despite no cold
• Restless sleep or poor-quality sleep
• Pauses in breathing during sleep (sleep apnea)
• Frequent colds or sinus infections
• Recurrent ear infections
• Reduced hearing due to ear fluid
• Nasal-sounding speech
• Daytime tiredness or poor concentration

How Do We Diagnose Enlarged Adenoids?

Evaluation usually includes:

• Detailed ENT examination
• Assessment of sleep and breathing symptoms
• Ear examination and hearing assessment if needed
• Nasal endoscopy (a small camera test) in selected children

How Are Enlarged Adenoids Treated?

Medical Treatment:
• Nasal sprays
• Allergy treatment
• Saline nasal washes
• Treatment of infections
• Observation and follow-up
Some children improve significantly with medical treatment alone.

Adenoidectomy:
If symptoms are severe or persistent, surgery may be recommended. An adenoidectomy is a short procedure performed under general anesthesia to remove the enlarged adenoid tissue from behind the nose.

When Is Surgery Usually Recommended?

Surgery may be advised if a child has:
• Significant snoring or sleep apnea
• Persistent mouth breathing
• Recurrent ear infections
• Hearing problems due to ear fluid
• Frequent sinus infections
• Poor sleep affecting growth or concentration
• Failure to improve with medicines

Is Adenoid Surgery Safe?

Yes. Adenoidectomy is one of the most commonly performed pediatric ENT surgeries and is generally very safe when done by experienced pediatric ENT surgeons.
Children usually recover quickly and can often return home the same day.

What Happens After Surgery?

Most children experience:
• Better nasal breathing
• Improved sleep quality
• Less snoring
• Better hearing if ear fluid was present
• Reduced frequency of infections
• Improved daytime energy and concentration

Important Reassurance for Parents

Not every child with enlarged adenoids needs surgery.

Many children improve naturally as they grow. The decision for treatment depends on:
• Severity of symptoms
• Sleep quality
• Ear and hearing problems
• Effect on growth, learning, and daily life

Our goal is always to choose the safest and most appropriate treatment for your child.
